SARAH MALSOM

THERAPIST

ROOTED IN EXPERIENCE, GUIDED BY COMPASSION

Welcome—I’m glad you’re here.
I was born and raised in a small town in Iowa, where I learned the value of community, though I often longed for broader perspectives. That pull led me to New York, where I earned my degree in psychology, then on to Colorado, where I worked in adoption, served as a probation officer, and even rally raced with my brother—adventures that shaped how I see people and life.
Later in my mid 20s, I returned to New York and took on one of my most transformative roles: gaining custody of two teenage girls. While raising them, I worked full-time at an addiction clinic, earned my master’s in Community Mental Health Counseling and became a certified addictions counselor.
When they launched into adulthood, I moved back to Colorado and spent eight years working in an inpatient psychiatric facility, while also supporting clients in addiction treatment programs. Over the past decade, I’ve focused more deeply on couples and family therapy, trauma work, teens, and all aspects of addiction.
I’m also a mom to a tween daughter who adores her much older sisters. Our home is full of love, laughter, a few animals (yes—chickens!), and the beautiful mess of real life.
My own journey—both personal and professional—has taught me that healing is always possible. Whether you’re navigating relationship struggles, addiction, trauma, or simply feeling stuck, I’m here to walk with you through it. Therapy can be hard work—but it’s also a place of possibility, connection, and healing.
If you're ready to explore, I’m here to walk with you.

MY MISSION

I’ve been a therapist for over two decades, and my passion for this work continues to grow. I genuinely love helping individuals and couples navigate life’s complexities, offering a space that’s both honest and compassionate. My approach is direct, yet grounded in empathy—blending kindness with firm, respectful guidance.
To me, therapy is a collaborative partnership. While I can’t do the work for you, I’ll walk beside you, offering insight, challenge, and support as you move toward healing, growth, and deeper connection. My ultimate goal is to help you re-engage—with yourself, with others, and with the life you want to lead.
My background as a probation officer shaped my directness, while my years in counseling helped me temper that with warmth and emotional attunement. I aim to strike a balance that motivates you toward change, while honoring the reality of actions and consequences.
Therapy isn’t always easy—it often gets harder before it gets better. But growth lives in that discomfort. I offer practical tools, honest feedback, and support for the work of stepping outside your comfort zone.
My practice draws from a variety of theories and techniques, tailoring each session to your unique needs. I'm influenced by the work of Terry Real and Esther Perel when working with couples, and by the Gottman Method for strengthening connection and communication. I turn to Brené Brown’s research on vulnerability and shame, and Gabor Maté’s insights into trauma, addiction, and mindfulness. I also integrate the principles of Nonviolent Communication and the attachment-based work of Stan Tatkin.
Having personally experienced EMDR therapy, I’ve seen its potential to unlock powerful healing. While no method fits everyone, I value EMDR as one of the many tools I can draw on when appropriate.
Wherever you are in your journey, I welcome you—with honesty, hope, and the belief that meaningful change is always possible.
